The sun stretches across an antique ivory tab, and mounted by two sterling rivets to an architectural arched piece that is pierced by two circles.  Below the sun, hang a sunflower disc, and other sun totem charms and dangling beads.  On either side of the central piece are two sterling tubes that hold the strand of smokey Czech glass beads in blue-grey hues that seem to have been colored by the sun itself.   This 20″ piece ends in a hand made sterling toggle clasp that is safe and functional and easy to maneuver behind your neck!  Made for a sun worshipper!

Goodie’s Soft Place

Another place to see my jewelry if you are local.

Monday, May 21st, 2012

I now have my jewelry at Art on Main, in Bristol, Vt.  (A nice mountain town with cool people.)  I’ve been working hard to get a good sized lump of jewelry  to submit.  They are carrying several of the ivory pieces.  If you are in the area, go check it out!

Soon, I will also have jewelry in the gift shop  at  Basin Harbor Club.

I’m spreading myself thin these days.  Gardening, making art  and jewelry in the beloved studio space here.  The Kestrels are nesting over my head in the rafters, the chickens are happy and roaming about, butterflies and bees are active…. life is so sweet.

Ivory

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

A friend gave me her old piano keys.  They are ivory.  I have started another line of jewelry using these pieces, combining them with sterling and brass metals.  Scrimshaw is an old mariner’s traditional technique using a scribe to etch lines in the highly polished surface of the ivory.  Inks are then rubbed into the etched lines and re-polished.     It takes time to prepare the surface. Almost as much time as it takes to do the artwork.

Bear Paw earrings

Here is an informational blurb I have been including with the sale of a piece:

About this ivory:

This “pre-ban” ivory was salvaged from a one hundred year
old piano from a local church that was
destined for the junk heap.
I cleaned, shaped, and polished the keys before etching
in the old scrimshaw technique to make this jewelry.

While working with the pieces, I was reminded of
the great, sentient beings from which this
material originated,  and how they moved across this
earth with their kin .

These salvaged pieces hold their essence.
I have worked with them in reverence
and sorrow for the taking of their lives..
It feels right to create beauty from their loss.

Imbued with the energy of music from an old
piano played in worship for one hundred years,
please wear these ivory pieces
and continue their life in beauty.

Peacock feather Ivory nk

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

This peacock feather was etched on one of the larger ivory piano keys.  It is riveted onto a Nugold, (a brass alloy), backing with a high polish.  The piece is about 3 inches long and slightly flared at the bottom of the tab shape.  Small dots are stamped in the top, just under the sterling tube which holds the tab to the sterling silver chain.  All connecting pieces are securely wrapped to withstand movement of the necklace and there are no jump rings to come undone.  It hangs at 16″ and is finished with a handmade sterling clasp and a silver feather charm that dangles delicately at the back of the neck.  Nice from the front and back!

Here are a few views with different backgrounds.  The colors are vibrant, with a metallic gold “eye-ring” in the center of the feather.

Mini eye painting: female left #4

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

In the Victorian era, people had their “miniatures” painted.  Sometimes just a mystery lover’s eye in a locket or on an ivory button.  I love the concept.  Windows to the soul, an image of the eye is very expressive.  These are painted on miniature 2″x2″ stretched canvases .  They come with a mini easel to display it on, but can easily be hung somewhere in a nook on a wall, from a tiny nail or standing tack.  …perhaps within a cluster of other pictures.

2×2-mini-eye-copy.jpg

I am working on a series of miniature eye paintings.  In the Victorian era, people would have their “miniatures” done by an artist.  Usually the work was done on ivory. A secret lover’s eye was usually encased in a locket or worn as a button.

I am painting the eye on a 2″x2″ miniature stretched canvas and including a nice little easel to display it on.  It can also be hung in a nook on a wall, by a small nail or tack.

I can do custom paintings if I have a photo.

The above photo is not quite full size.

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

time-nk-copy.jpgIt’s about time!  This piece seems to go on forever….  There are some vintage clock faces, gears, old clock parts, and reproduced clock parts in an antiqued patina.  Brass scrolled wire, with amber colored beads, clock hands, tree branches, discs with colorful seed beads wire-stitched on them.  It’s all here, and more!  A great conversation piece.  It hangs at about 22″.
